Meals on Wheels: Helping Older Adults Stay Safe, Nourished, and Connected

For many older adults in Broomfield, a warm meal delivered to their door means far more than nourishment — it represents safety, dignity, and connection.

Through the City and County of Broomfield Meals on Wheels program, older adults are supported in remaining healthy, independent, and able to age safely in their own homes. With support from local partners — including the Broomfield Community Foundation — the program continues to meet a rapidly growing need in our community.

During Broomfield Community Foundation's December 2025 Donor Appreciation Night, Nikki Crouse, Senior Services Manager with the City and County of Broomfield, shared how the demand for senior services has increased dramatically over the past two decades. She was joined by June Wagner, a longtime Broomfield resident and dedicated Meals on Wheels volunteer, who offered heartfelt insight into what these services mean to the seniors they serve.

Who Meals on Wheels Serves

The program provides meal delivery and wellness support to:

  • Broomfield residents age 60 and older
  • Caregivers of eligible older adults
  • Adults under 60 with documented medical need
  • Residents living within Broomfield County

More Than a Meal

Meals on Wheels delivers:

  • Freshly prepared, hot meals Monday–Friday
  • Frozen weekend meals
  • Friendly wellness checks at each visit

While meals are offered at a modest cost ($4 for hot meals, $2 for frozen meals), no one is turned away due to inability to pay. Each delivery also brings something just as important — human connection. For many participants, volunteers may be the only person they see that day.

“The volunteers are truly the eyes and ears of our community,” Nikki shared. “They notice changes, check in, and make sure our seniors are safe.” June echoed that sentiment, noting that some clients have little or no family nearby. The regular visits create trust, companionship, and reassurance — helping older adults feel seen, valued, and cared for.

A Growing Need in Broomfield

The need for Meals on Wheels has grown by more than 180% over the past 20 years. In 2005, approximately 13,005 meals were delivered. In 2025, that number grew to more than 37,000 meals served. This dramatic increase reflects a growing senior population and the importance of ensuring older adults can remain in their homes with dignity.

How the Program Is Funded

Broomfield Meals on Wheels receives no federal or state funding. The program is sustained entirely through local support, including:

  • City & County of Broomfield funding
  • Client meal fees
  • Local donors
  • Community grants, including support from the Broomfield Community Foundation

Together, We Make a Difference

With continued community investment, Meals on Wheels helps:

  • Reduce food insecurity
  • Combat isolation and loneliness
  • Promote independence
  • Support older adults aging safely at home in Broomfield

Because of generous donors and partners, thousands of seniors each year receive not only nutritious meals — but reassurance, dignity, and connection. Thank you for helping make this possible.
