The power of planned giving

Ensure your values live on in Broomfield.

A planned gift through the Broomfield Community Foundation makes this possible with our impactful nonprofit grantmaking and scholarship programs.

A planned gift through your will or trust is one of the simplest ways to ensure your values live on in Broomfield, and it will not affect your cash flow during your lifetime. By working with the Foundation, you can create a bequest for the future that supports the causes you care about most, or you can leave a gift that allows the Foundation to meet the community’s most critical needs over time.

BCF encourages all community members to consider leaving a gift to the Generations Fund. Making a bequest is one of the simplest and most impactful gifts you can make.

John and I chose a planned gift to the Broomfield Community Foundation as the most straightforward and comprehensive way to ensure that our contributions to community activities and important needs will continue well into the future.”

How it works

Participating in the Generations Fund is a straightforward, three-step process.

01

Reach out to us

We encourage you to reach out before meeting with your legal or financial advisor to ensure your gift is aligned with both your charitable goals and our mission. We’ll guide you through the necessary steps for proper documentation and prepare you for a productive discussion with your advisor. Contact us at 303-469-7208 or info@broomfieldfoundation.org.

02

Consult your advisors

With guidance from your legal and/or financial advisor, you can include language in your estate plan to support both your loved ones and the Foundation. As the beneficiary of your gift, the Foundation holds the legal and fiduciary responsibility to honor your wishes, whether directed to an existing Foundation Fund or a Special Purpose / Field of Interest Fund.

Notify us & celebrate your legacy

Once your gift is finalized, share the details with us so we can acknowledge your generosity and include it in our records. When you establish a Generations Fund estate gift, you become part of the Generations Fund Circle (GFC), the Foundation’s group honoring those who have included us in their estate plans. A team member will connect with you to explore your preferred level of involvement.

Commonly transferred assets

Two of the most significant assets are transferred by beneficiary designation.

  • Qualified retirement plans

By naming the Broomfield Community Foundation as the beneficiary of a qualified retirement plan, you not only accomplish your charitable goals but also retain complete control over the assets while living. At your passing, the remaining assets pass to the Foundation free of both estate and income taxes—a decision you make with full autonomy.

Beneficiaries are typically named when the IRA or other qualified retirement plan account is first established. Changes to your beneficiaries are generally easily made through the financial services company that manages your retirement plan, typically through their online portal.

  • Life insurance

Gifting your life insurance policy is an excellent way to give. Like retirement plans, naming the Broomfield Community Foundation as the beneficiary of a life insurance policy or your donor advised fund is straightforward, and can usually be done via your company’s online portal. You’ll likely need to provide the Foundation’s tax ID number: 84-1246756.

Option A: If you have a life insurance policy that is no longer essential, you can donate it and take an immediate tax deduction. By donating the entire policy and designating the Foundation as the owner, the policy will transfer and you will no longer need to pay the premiums.

Option B: Name the Foundation as a beneficiary, either in whole or for a specific percentage. The Foundation will receive the proceeds upon your death to ensure your charitable intentions are met.

Please let us know you have named us as a beneficiary so we can contact the insurance company or fund at the appropriate time and put your gift to work as you intend.
