Baseline's 6th annual celebration brought people and pollinators together, with the Youth Advisory Council (YAC) volunteering. Free and open to the public, this year, Baseline shone a light on fireflies.

YAC team members led the interactive community art, where folks could get hands-on, lighting up their creativity.

BCF joined community partners for the ribbon cutting of The Grove at Cottonwood, a 40-unit community with homes for adults with IDD.

On September 2, the Broomfield Community Foundation was honored to join community partners for the ribbon-cutting of The Grove at Cottonwood, a new 40-unit income-aligned rental community that includes ten dedicated homes for adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD). Additional IDD families can apply for units designated for low-income housing.

Across Colorado, thousands of IDD adults are seeking what so many of us take for granted: a safe, supportive, and independent place to call home. As aging caregivers worry about the future, and young adults with IDD look for a life beyond their childhood homes, the need for thoughtful, inclusive housing has never been more urgent.

The Grove at Cottonwood is more than a housing development. It is a bold step forward in creating a community where everyone can thrive, offering permanent, neuro-inclusive housing that empowers residents to live with dignity, independence, and connection. Read

A Community Celebration 25 Years in the Making

Reflecting on the 25th and final Heart of Broomfield, honoring the TerHar family and the generations of leaders, volunteers and donors who shaped our community.

As we reflect on the 25th and final Heart of Broomfield, we are filled with gratitude for the Business Impact Partners, Family Sponsors, donors, volunteers, past honorees, and community leaders who helped make this milestone celebration possible.

For 25 years, Heart of Broomfield served as an opportunity to recognize the individuals, families, businesses, and organizations whose generosity helped shape our community. The final event was both a celebration of that legacy and a reminder of what can be accomplished when people come together in service to others.

          Honoring the TerHar Family

The evening's most meaningful moment was honoring Jack Jr. and Penny TerHar and the TerHar family with the Enduring Heart Lifetime Achievement Award. Their vision, generosity, and leadership have helped strengthen the Broomfield Community Foundation and countless community initiatives over the past quarter century.

Just as importantly, the event reunited generations of community leaders, volunteers, nonprofit partners, and residents who have contributed to Broomfield's success. The atmosphere throughout the evening reflected the relationships and shared commitment that have long defined our community.

          As attendee Bill Heck observed:

"The crowd assembled for the Roundup last Thursday evening was amazing—not only did you have the right long-term Broomfielders, you had newcomers as well. The crowd was a statement of the success of the Foundation."

Tina Eichner shared a similar sentiment:

"A room filled with dozens and dozens of Broomfield change makers including many who helped shape this very town... Lots of smiles and hugs and love. These people ARE Broomfield—and so am I."

Those reflections perfectly capture what Heart of Broomfield has always been about: bringing people together to celebrate generosity, strengthen connections, and inspire community impact.

          Thank You

          To our

           sponsors and partners

, thank you for investing in a stronger Broomfield. Your support helps the Broomfield Community Foundation connect generosity with community needs, strengthen local nonprofits, support students through scholarships, and create opportunities that improve lives for generations to come.

While the Heart of Broomfield chapter has come to a close, the spirit of collaboration, philanthropy, and community leadership it celebrated will continue to guide our work for years to come.

One of the most meaningful moments of Heart of Broomfield’s May 28th evening was recognizing Jack Jr. and Penny TerHar and the TerHar family with the Enduring Heart Lifetime Achievement Award. More than 25 years ago, Jack's $100,000 challenge gift inspired our community to establish the Legacy Fund Endowment with a vision of reaching $1 million. While the journey took longer than expected, that vision became reality—and today the Legacy Fund has grown to more than $2 million.

Community Impact Film Highlights the Power of Collaboration

BCF premiered a Community Impact Film at the 2026 Heart of Broomfield showing how Broomfield nonprofits work together to change lives.

Behind every success story is a community that cares.

At the 2026 Heart of Broomfield celebration, the Broomfield Community Foundation premiered a Community Impact Film highlighting the remarkable work taking place every day across Broomfield's nonprofit sector.

The film follows the journey of a community member who faced significant life challenges and found support through a network of nonprofit organizations working together to provide assistance, encouragement, and pathways toward stability.

While each organization played a unique role, the story illustrates an important truth: meaningful community impact rarely happens in isolation.

When nonprofits collaborate, share resources, and connect individuals to the right services at the right time, lives can change.

The film also highlights the important role donors, volunteers, staff members, board members, and community partners play in supporting this work. Their collective commitment helps ensure that individuals and families have access to the resources they need to thrive.

The Broomfield Community Foundation is proud to support and strengthen the nonprofit sector through grantmaking, convening, collaboration, and community leadership.

We invite you to watch the film and see the impact that is possible when a community works together.

Twelve local high school students are demonstrating that philanthropy has no age requirement.

This spring, members of the Broomfield Community Foundation's Youth Advisory Council (YAC) awarded a $2,000 grant to the Five Star Education Foundation to support students and families experiencing food insecurity.

Throughout the school year, YAC members worked together to learn about local challenges, discuss community needs, and raise funds to support causes important to their peers and neighbors.

After evaluating several issues affecting local families, the students selected food insecurity as their focus area. Their efforts culminated in the opportunity to present the grant to Five Star Education Foundation Board Member David Flaherty.

The Youth Advisory Council provides students with hands-on experience in philanthropy, leadership, teamwork, and grantmaking.

Participants learn how charitable dollars are invested while developing a deeper understanding of community needs.

The Foundation is proud of these young leaders and their commitment to creating positive change throughout Broomfield.

Meals on Wheels: Helping Older Adults Stay Safe, Nourished, and Connected

With support from BCF, Broomfield Meals on Wheels helps older adults stay healthy, independent, and connected at home.

For many older adults in Broomfield, a warm meal delivered to their door means far more than nourishment — it represents safety, dignity, and connection.

Through the City and County of Broomfield Meals on Wheels program, older adults are supported in remaining healthy, independent, and able to age safely in their own homes. With support from local partners — including the Broomfield Community Foundation — the program continues to meet a rapidly growing need in our community.

During Broomfield Community Foundation's December 2025 Donor Appreciation Night, Nikki Crouse, Senior Services Manager with the City and County of Broomfield, shared how the demand for senior services has increased dramatically over the past two decades. She was joined by June Wagner, a longtime Broomfield resident and dedicated Meals on Wheels volunteer, who offered heartfelt insight into what these services mean to the seniors they serve.

          Meals on Wheels delivers:

          Freshly prepared, hot meals Monday–Friday

          Frozen weekend meals

Friendly wellness checks at each visit

While meals are offered at a modest cost ($4 for hot meals, $2 for frozen meals), no one is turned away due to inability to pay. Each delivery also brings something just as important — human connection. For many participants, volunteers may be the only person they see that day.

“The volunteers are truly the eyes and ears of our community,” Nikki shared. “They notice changes, check in, and make sure our seniors are safe.” June echoed that sentiment, noting that some clients have little or no family nearby. The regular visits create trust, companionship, and reassurance — helping older adults feel seen, valued, and cared for.

          A Growing Need in Broomfield

The need for Meals on Wheels has grown by more than 180% over the past 20 years. In 2005, approximately 13,005 meals were delivered. In 2025, that number grew to more than 37,000 meals served. This dramatic increase reflects a growing senior population and the importance of ensuring older adults can remain in their homes with dignity.

Broomfield Meals on Wheels receives no federal or state funding. The program is sustained entirely through local support, including:

Small Grants. Big Impact: How Donor Giving Restores Dignity and Stability

BCF grants help Broomfield FISH respond quickly when neighbors face urgent needs, from beds for a newly housed family to lease relief.

Financial support from the BCF allows partner organizations such as Broomfield FISH to respond quickly when our neighbors face urgent, often unexpected, challenges. Thanks to the support from BCF, I’ve been able to help individuals meet critical needs that go far beyond food. I am currently working with a family who had been unhoused and sleeping in their car for several months. The family secured housing two months ago and needed home essentials. BCF approved my request for the purchase of beds for the family, which includes a 12-year-old child. We all know how vital it is to have a good night’s sleep, and that has been made possible by donors giving to the BCF grant fund.

Also, thanks to the Broomfield Community Foundation, a FISH Participant recently received vital grant support to cover final apartment lease payments after an unexpected mental health emergency forced them to end their lease early. This assistance prevented damage to their rental record and helped ensure they’ll have access to stable housing in the future, offering hope during a very difficult and challenging time.

These may seem like small things, but they are truly GINORMOUS acts of generosity that restore stability and confidence and allow for room to just catch one’s breath.

Each time I can tell someone, “Yes! We can help or know who can,” it reinforces to me that our community truly stands behind our neighbors who need it most. These grants remind our neighbors that they’re not alone and that directed compassion really can change the course of someone’s life. I am extremely grateful to BCF and their donors.

          Thank you.

Grantee Spotlight: A Precious Child

BCF supports A Precious Child's Resource Bridge, providing essentials and long-term pathways to stability for children and families.

In 2008, A Precious Child began in a garage with a simple mission: to provide children in need with essential resources and opportunities to reach their full potential. In their first year, they served just over 50 children. From that small but mighty start, A Precious Child has grown into a leading nonprofit headquartered right here in Broomfield—one that now serves eight counties and partners with more than 300 agencies.

BCF is proud to support A Precious Child through our Human Services grant cycle, a partnership with the City and County of Broomfield’s Department of Human Services. Our most recent grant helps fund A Precious Child’s Resource Bridge, a program that provides critical essentials while also connecting families with long-term pathways toward stability.

The Resource Bridge has three components:

Resource Center – A holistic hub where families access essential support and resources to work toward self-sufficiency.

Community Distributions – Large-scale events held in trusted local neighborhoods that remove transportation barriers and deliver essentials directly to families.

Satellite Resource Centers – Eighteen on-site “closets” located in schools, shelters, hospitals, and other partner facilities, including Broomfield’s Emerald Elementary School and the Department of Human Services office.

At the heart of A Precious Child’s mission are three pillars: Basic Needs, Enrichment Opportunities, and Workforce Readiness (Pathways).

Basic Needs: At its 26,000-square-foot facility in Broomfield, A Precious Child’s donation center processes an astonishing 4,000 pounds of clothing and household items every day. Families are then referred to the no-cost retail store, where in 2024 alone 7,000 families shopped for essentials. Each day, up to 40 families are welcomed, and each family member may leave with 40 items. On average, every family receives $2,019 worth of goods per year, and they may visit the store twice annually for up to two years.

Enrichment Opportunities: Beyond clothing and supplies, A Precious Child enriches children’s lives through programs such as the Fill A Backpack initiative, holiday gifts, and sports and dance camps—removing barriers so every child can learn, play, and grow.

Workforce Readiness (Pathways): This innovative program supports young adults by providing a safe space to learn workplace skills and gain hands-on experience in A Precious Child’s retail store and warehouse.

Efficiency is another hallmark of A Precious Child’s approach. Thanks to system improvements, families no longer face a four-month waitlist for referrals—wait times have been reduced to zero. Behind this progress is a community of 6,906 volunteers, who in 2024 contributed 39,514 hours of service.

As Nichole Everman, A Precious Child’s Chief Operating Officer, shared, the impact extends far beyond clothing: “By meeting families where they are—whether in a school, shelter, or neighborhood—we remove barriers and open doors to opportunity.”

BCF and the City and County of Broomfield are honored to invest in A Precious Child’s work, ensuring that children and families across our region can access the support they need to thrive.

2025-2026 Youth Advisory Council members kicked off programming by supporting the Baseline Community Bees & Blossoms Festival August 16th. This is the second year of involvement and the YAC team organized a range of interactive games engaging community members. It was great creating neighborly fun by bringing participants of all ages to the 'Big Green' field!

With BCF support, Cultivate exceeded its 2025 goals providing no-cost grocery delivery and more to Broomfield older adults.

An important BCF grantee, Cultivate, supports older adults with no-cost grocery shopping and delivery, medical transportation, companion phone calls, and minor home/safety repairs.

Through BCF support, Cultivate exceeded its 2025 program goals by midsummer:

From July 7–11, 2025, 36 students immersed themselves in a hands-on STEM summer camp where half attended on scholarship.

BCF grant support provided reusable science and engineering kits—from stream tables to hydropower and bridge kits—giving students the chance to “go deep and get messy.” As Executive Director Jamie Rumsey shared:

“We knew we had reached our goal on the first day when a sixth-grader asked, ‘Why can’t our science class in school be like this?’ The kids were soaked and sandy, but they had just discovered how water shapes landscapes.”

By the week’s end, students were experimenting with water pollution and the challenges of cleanup—concluding it’s always better not to pollute in the first place.

Day of Empowerment for Our Youth: Fostering Mental Health Conversations

The Day of Empowerment brought youth, families, and partners together for candid conversations about youth mental health.

On Saturday, July 19, the Broomfield Auditorium was filled with compassion, creativity, and candid conversations during The Day of Empowerment—a community event. Designed to foster resilience, hope, and meaningful dialogue around youth mental health, the event brought together young people, families, community partners, and advocates in a shared space of learning and connection.

Long-time community member Mercy Manresa voluntarily coordinated the event, knowing how important this cause is in the State of Colorado. Suicide is the leading cause of death for youth in

Even before the COVID crisis, data pointed to troubling trends in child and youth mental health, with Colorado’s suicide rate for teens ages 15 to 19 reaching historically high levels, and suicides among teens ages 10 to 14 becoming increasingly common. In 2020 alone, 101 Colorado kids and teens ages 10 to 19 lost their lives to suicide, up from 50 young people a decade prior.

The day began with a screening of My Sister Liv, a deeply moving documentary that chronicles the life of Olivia (Liv) of Niwot, Colorado. Through home videos and narration by her sister Tess, the film explored the layered reality of teen and young adult mental health—covering anxiety, depression, bullying, the pressure to conform, and the darker side of social media.

Despite having a strong support network, Liv died by suicide in her early 20s while attending the University of Northern Colorado. The film powerfully underscored the message that even when someone seems supported, internal struggles may remain unseen.

Following the screening, a panel of experts—including Liv’s mother, Honey, a co-founder of The Liv Project—shared stories and practical advice. They emphasized the importance of open communication and mental health safety plans, likening them to fire escape plans every household should have.

Using simple check-in tools—like texting a 1–5 scale to communicate how someone is feeling.

Having key phrases or signals within the household for when support is needed.

And even asking direct questions like “Are you thinking of self-harming?” or “Are you suicidal right now?”—and knowing it's okay to speak up.

The BCORE co-response team, Stefanie Van Jacobs and Brandon Kozloff of the Broomfield Police Department, explained how mental health specialists support officers during crisis calls. Their presence ensures compassionate, skillful responses and eases the burden on traditional law enforcement. They demystified the 911 response process, helping attendees understand what to expect when seeking help for someone in crisis.

Sherry Burkhard, Executive Director of Rise Against Suicide, shared vital resources, including access to up to 12 free therapy sessions for youth under 19. They also spotlighted the additional challenges faced by LGBTQ+ youth, who are at significantly higher risk for suicidal ideation.

Between the panel and the evening’s youth concert, attendees took part in creative workshops—making buttons, posters, and connecting over a meal from local food trucks. The event wrapped with a high-energy performance by local band Avendetta, celebrating community and the power of youth voices.

When Mercy asked the audience if they found the event helpful, nearly every hand in the auditorium rose. The Day of Empowerment wasn’t just an event—it was a catalyst for change, a safe space for listening, learning, and leading with heart.

The children, ranging from ages 5 to 14, were primarily recruited from families connected to Broomfield FISH and The Refuge—two trusted nonprofit partners that serve lower-income and higher-need populations.

Over 200 Rising K Summer Summit students gathered at Birch Elementary in June to learn what kindergarten will be like this fall. Classroom sizes limited to 18 students allowed the bright-eyed kids to learn routines and meet future classmates before they start school at Aspen Creek, Birch, Emerald, and Kohl elementary schools.

Do you remember the first time you sat crisscross on a classroom rug, learning how to raise your hand before speaking or counting out marshmallows to build a house that could stand up to a huff and puff? For incoming kindergarteners, these “firsts” are big moments—and this June, the Broomfield Community Foundation had the chance to see that magic in action.

’s fully funded Rising K Summer Summit, a unique school readiness program for incoming kindergarteners. Held at Birch Elementary, the program welcomed 200 soon-to-be kindergarteners, including bright-eyed students from Aspen Creek, Birch, Emerald, and Kohl elementary schools. These young learners gathered on classroom rugs, listened to stories like “The Three Little Pigs,” created music, and built marshmallow houses—learning not just shapes and numbers, but resilience, teamwork, and the power of asking for help.

“If I’m stuck and really frustrated, what do I do?” asked kindergarten teacher Becky Spear. “I stop, take a deep breath, and say, ‘I need help.’”

          Why Rising K Matters

Early childhood education has a proven track record of improving long-term outcomes. Through programs like Rising K, students—many of whom have not had access to preschool—experience what a full day of kindergarten feels like. For families facing barriers to early learning, this program creates a critical on-ramp to academic success.

Impact on Education’s outreach efforts, in partnership with Sister Carmen, Community Food Share, Boulder Housing Partners, and Head Start, help ensure that children from historically underserved communities are included. Last year’s results speak volumes:

80% met or exceeded kindergarten readiness benchmarks

80% showed improvement in literacy and numeracy

The district provides most of the curriculum for teachers so it’s consistent across sites. The district hired about 90 current and retired Boulder Valley educators for Summer Summit, plus additional teachers for the special education program. Teachers who are looking to become administrators are hired as the leaders at each site. We saw the exceptional classroom management and engagement techniques in action, ensuring quieter or hesitant students would partake.

Site leaders like Nathan Spencer, a special education teacher at Broomfield High School, added creative support tools like sticker charts to encourage engagement. “This definitely gives them a boost,” Spencer said.

With rotating electives like art, music, and PE, social-emotional learning lessons, and class sizes capped at 18 for Rising K, the program nurtures the whole child.

In total, about 2,100 students participated in BVSD’s summer programs this year, including students in special education and high schoolers in credit recovery. For those who attended Summer Summit, it was a month of growth, connection, and possibility.

After pandemic-era funding for summer programming ended, it was community-based philanthropy that stepped in. Impact on Education contributed more than $330,000 this summer, including $195,000 for the Rising K program alone. The Summer Summit is a powerful example of what happens when schools, nonprofits, and donors work together to ensure every child has a chance to succeed.

The 2024-2025 YAC hosted Bounce Back, a teen-focused fundraiser at Lafayette Bounce Empire—a massive facility packed with inflatable bounce structures. In addition, local mental health providers connected with the teens through a fun competition. Healthy connections were built all evening long.

100% of the event’s profits were directed to grantmaking for local mental health nonprofits, which were announced at the Heart of Broomfield Awards.

From start to finish, YAC members led every stage of the cycle: promoting the opportunity, outlining a clear application process—including a video submission component—responding to applicant questions, evaluating submissions, and making thoughtful, final funding decisions. They also took on the important role of notifying applicants of their outcomes with professionalism and care.

Newbold is the Youth Engagement Squad’s co-communication chair, and said that the service projects squad members complete are a great way for students to get involved and help their community.

Growing Reading Readiness of Broomfield Preschoolers

The Imagination Library, supported locally by Rotary, mails free books every month to Broomfield children from birth to age five.

Dennis Kennedy, retired school principal and Broomfield Rotary Club leader, shared the transformative story of the Imagination Library Program. This child reading readiness initiative is changing the lives of children and families in our community by fostering a love of reading from an early age.

Founded by Dolly Parton, the Imagination Library mails free, high-quality books to children from birth to age five, regardless of family income. Each child enrolled in the program receives a specially selected book every month, delivered directly to their home. This ensures children experience the excitement of receiving books and the magic that stories can create—while also ensuring every child, no matter their circumstances, has access to books.

The program relies on a strong network of Local Affiliates and Partners to bring this vision to life. In Broomfield, the program is sponsored by the State of Colorado and the Broomfield Evening Rotary Club, which manages local enrollment and promotes the program online and at community events. While the Imagination Library negotiates wholesale book pricing, the Rotary plays a vital role in securing funds to cover a portion of the costs, ensuring books remain 100% free for participating families.

Dennis highlighted how early exposure to reading builds confidence, setting children on a trajectory for academic success and, ultimately, a productive life. “These children,” he noted, “will someday be our community leaders.”

He urged attendees to support the Imagination Library by contributing financially and sharing the program with parents of young children. Spreading the word helps connect more families to this incredible opportunity.

Addressing Food Insecurity in the Denver Front Range

Food insecurity is a pressing issue along the Denver Front Range, affecting a significant portion of the population. Recent statistics reveal that approximately 1 in 8 individuals in the region struggles with food insecurity, translating to over 400,000 people unsure of where their next meal will come from. This problem is particularly acute in low-income neighborhoods and food deserts, where access to fresh and nutritious food is limited.

In response to this critical issue,

           We Don’t Waste

was founded in 2009 with a mission to tackle food waste while addressing food insecurity. As one of the largest food recovery organizations in Colorado, We Don’t Waste plays a vital role in ensuring that surplus food reaches those in need instead of ending up in landfills.

We Don’t Waste prioritizes rescuing perishable items such as fresh produce, lean proteins, and dairy products. These foods not only have a shorter shelf life but their production also has a significant environmental impact. By focusing on these items, We Don’t Waste not only helps reduce food waste but also provides nutritious food to families and individuals who might otherwise go without.

This approach is particularly beneficial for those living in food deserts, where access to fresh foods is severely limited. By providing a steady supply of fresh produce, lean proteins, and dairy products, We Don’t Waste helps ensure that these communities have access to healthier food options.

In addition to directly serving individuals and families, We Don’t Waste supplements the food assistance provided by their partner nonprofits. This collaboration allows recipient partners to offer consistent, healthy, and wholesome foods without increasing their operating costs. Consequently, these nonprofits can allocate more of their financial resources to other critical programs and services.

Through its innovative approach to food recovery and distribution, We Don’t Waste not only mitigates the environmental impact of food waste but also makes a substantial difference in the lives of those facing food insecurity in the Denver Front Range.

We Don’t Waste is deeply committed to supporting the community and the environment by providing quality food at no cost to nonprofit organizations feeding those experiencing food insecurity. The organization is driven by the belief that the strength of a community is measured by its compassion. By supplying nonprofits with the food they need, We Don’t Waste helps ensure that vulnerable populations have access to nutritious meals.

          Mobile Food Markets

In the Metro Denver area, approximately 50 neighborhoods are classified as food deserts, lacking access to affordable, fresh, and nutritious food. To address this issue, We Don’t Waste developed a Mobile Food Market, which brings healthy and nutritious food directly to these underserved areas. This initiative aims to bridge the gap in food accessibility and ensure that all community members have access to the sustenance they need.

Food waste is a collective issue that can be tackled at both the community and household levels. While We Don’t Waste focuses on recovering good food from businesses for redistribution, it also emphasizes the importance of reducing food waste at home. With the average household of four wasting about $1,600 annually on food, We Don’t Waste encourages everyone to become food waste warriors. By eating seasonally and being mindful of food consumption, individuals can contribute to a larger effort to minimize food waste and its environmental impact.

The Leonard Rudolph Fund, established to help patients, survivors, and caregivers of those with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (also known as Lou Gehrig's Disease), has recently made an incredible impact.

Having these chairs has also saved us from a lot of falls (and me picking him up off the floor). So, thank you so much from the bottom of our hearts for them….Thank you for giving me hope that there are still some good, kind, and caring people in the world….“

The money is planned to go to a Broomfield case manager to make sure that that person can stay on through the rest of 2024. The group’s case managers help people who use the parking sites to find resources and to navigate the bureaucracy around those resources.

“Housing is a top priority, and we want to make sure that we’re contributing to organizations that are also supporting housing efforts in Broomfield,” said Lisa Herman, the Broomfield Community Foundation board president.

All parking sites have a bathroom – often a portable toilet. The group partners with site hosts at each parking site – a person who vets everyone who parks. Interested participants register for a permitted spot and are required to have car insurance, a valid driver’s license and a working and registered vehicle. The group’s executive director Terrell Curtis noted that part of what makes a parking lot “safe” is the community the parkers create.

“(The lots) are typically 10 to 15 cars. The people there get to know one another and create their own internal community and keep an eye on things,” Curtis said.

After two years of funding, Denver government officials cut the city’s contract with the group by $400,000, according to Denver Housing spokesman Derek Woodbury. He said there were challenges with spending and reporting during the contract period.

This program, comprising a curriculum and a simulation, helps students build a foundation to make intelligent financial decisions that last a lifetime, including decisions related to income, expenses, savings, and credit. Students are conceptualizing what it will take to live independently – housing, utilities, car loans and payments, health, car, homeowner’s insurance, food, entertainment, travel, and 401K.
